Headstones & Memorials – Creating The Perfect One

Your family member is now at rest and now is the time to create an everlasting tribute to them. The question is, how do you decide which type of stone, what color lettering and which inscription? Memorials and headstones are available in a wide range of different materials, colors and sizes. For example, marble, stone and granite memorials are all available Choosing between them can be confusing.

Start with the color. What was your loved ones favorite color?Granite headstones are available in nearly every color, so do not think that you are restricted to choosing from black, gray and white.

The majority of cemeteries permit various colors of headstones and memorial plaques, but churchyards are stricter. If in doubt, ask the churchyard or cemetery for a copy of their rules and regulations.

Once you have chosen your color, think about what you want the headstone or memorial to say. The inscription should give the name, date of birth and date of death of the deceased, but you are not limited to just that. Consider adding one of their favorite sayings, or some words that best describe them.

You might want to personalize the headstone or memorial with a design too. Many different designs are available to be laser etched or sandblasted on to it. These can range from simple flowers to pictures of your loved one.

Most headstones and memorials come in set sizes. Bigger is not necessarily mean better, and a smaller, better quality one can be equally as good. Churchyards tend to only permit headstones or memorials up to a maximum height, whereas most cemeteries will allow them to be any size.

If you want ideas, then look on the Internet, as there are plenty of websites that have online catalogs of headstones and memorials. Alternatively, you could take a walk around a cemetery or churchyard near where you live to see which styles you prefer.

You should make a shortlist of details that you want, or even draw a sketch of how you would like it to look. Having done this, it is time to contact a few stores which make and memorials and headstones to ascertain if they are able to create the style and design that you have in mind.

As with everything in life, prices will vary and are normally negotiable, so ask about discounts and be prepared to shop around. Once you have placed your order, you can expect the memorial or headstone to be ready within a month.
